Really thoughtful post! I find it's so helpful to understand what drives a certain group or party's underlining need. What I'll be curious to see unpacked is how to communicate this information to those who are supporting policies that work in opposition to what they are seeking? All of this clashes up against a lot of misinformation and disinformation, as well as polarization of not only politics but information sources, making it harder to reach various individuals within the U.S. Really enjoyed this piece!

Thanks Megan! I have a hard time unpacking what people want and what they think that they will get. This fall, when speaking about my book and the topic of inequality, I would frequently get asked questions like "why do people vote against their own self interest?" And that's a complicated question. It isn't that people lack intelligence. Instead they see something different in MAGA than I do. I agree that mis/disinformation is a part of it. And I think that is also bound up in the spirit of Horatio Alger stories and of the supremacy of markets and meritocracy. These get in the way of communication. On one hand people believe that those who rise up do so of their own making, and those that don't were tripped up by the government and DEI and ... When people believe that, its really hard to get to into people thoughts and hearts.
